The MacGahan American Bulgarian Foundation

1976-2005

The MacGahan Foundation was formed in 1978 to commemorate the life of Januarius A. MacGahan-- a journalist and war correspondent born near New Lexington in 1844. It was MacGahan's vivid dispatches from Bulgaria in 1872 to the London Daily News detailing the atrocities of the invading Turkish forces  which helped mobilize world opinion to stop the slaughter.  These dispatches earned him the title "Liberator of Bulgaria."

While MacGahan is considered a national hero in Bulgaria, he is relatively unknown in the United States and in his native Perry County. Recognizing this fact the foundation was formed to perpetuate his memory and increase awareness of his accomplishments particularly among the residents of Perry County.
The MacGahan American Bulgarian Foundation is a non-profit organization funded primarily by private donations.

The MacGahan Festival

The foundation hosts an annual weekend American-Bulgarian festival in New Lexington, OH. in early June in tribute to MacGahan and in celebration of the Bulgarian culture and heritage that he helped preserve. The festival is open to the public.  New Lexington is located one hour southeast of Columbus, Ohio.  The 2005 MacGahan American Bulgarian Festival will be held the weekend of  JUNE 10-11, 2005.  The format of the festival is similar each year.  It opens Friday evening with an informal reception particularly to welcome out of town guests.  Saturday morning there is a memorial service at the grave site of Januarius MacGahan at the New Lexington Cemetery, the placing of a floral tribute at the MacGahan statue across from the Perry County Court House, and a Bulgarian luncheon and program.

While in New Lexington  visitors have the opportunity to visit the grave site of Januarius MacGahan in the New Lexington Cemetery and the MacGahan Foundation permanent display of Bulgarian books and artifacts at the Perry County District Library. A bibliography of the holdings of the MacGahan Foundation is available from The Perry County Library and is accessible on their web site.

Who is Delores Crawford?

Delores has been a participant in the recreational fold dance community of southern California for 23 years.  During those years she also studied in the Dance Ethnology program at UCLA, and danced and sang with Nancy Ruyter's "Jasna Planina" (3 years), Anthony Shay's "AVAZ" (7 years), and Graham Hempel's "San Diego Folk Ensemble" (2 years).  In addition, she taught master classes at San Diego State University.  She has recently relocated to Ohio.

Who is Hajde?

Hajde (pronounced HIGH-deh) means "Let's go!," and exemplifies how this band likes to play music for dancers. These musicians have come together because of a common love for the Eastern European music they've been studying for over ten years.  Always attempting to play in a folk-like manner, they still like to add special touches to make the music uniquely "their own."  This will be their third appearance at the  MacGahan Festival.

The MacGahan American Bulgarian Foundation Scholarships

The MacGahan Foundation awards two five hundred dollar scholarships annually to graduating Seniors of Perry County.  One scholarship is awarded to a senior from New Lexington High School.  The second is awarded to a senior from one of the following schools:  Crooksville High School, Miller High School, Sheridan High School, or a Perry County resident from  Fisher Catholic High School, or Rosecrans High School.  The scholarship  is awarded at the school's academic awards program and the check is presented at the MacGahan Festival luncheon in June.

Due to the lack of consensus among the readers of this year's scholarship applications, the foundation is awarding three scholarships of $500 each.   Scholarship recepients from New Lexington High School are Khrista Halaiko and Danielle Spohn.  The county-wide scholarship winner is Anthony Redfern of Crooksville High School.

Scholarship Information

The MacGahan Scholarship application is now located on the New Lexington High School web site in Adobe Acrobat format.  It can be printed out and then completed or it can be filled out online.  Go to www.nlcs.k12.oh.us and follow the orange panther paws to New Lexington High School.  Select “Guidance” and then select “scholarship information.”  Go to the MacGahan Scholarship.

MacGahan Corporation Limit Markers

The corporation marker shown above left is one of two which have been in place in New Lexington since 1959.  They are located on Route 37 by the Perry County Fairgrounds and on State Routes 13, 37, and 93 near the VIP Motel.   At the 2003 festival two new markers (above right) were dedicated.  They are similar to those of 1959, but bear the text "Januarius A. MacGahan Champion of Bulgarian Freedom."  These markers were paid for in part by a grant from the Ohio Bicentennial Committee.

The new markers were erected entering New Lexington on State Route 13 on the Newlon Ford property and on State Route 345 across from ITT Higbie.  The weather worn existing markers were refurbished by the Ohio Department of Transportation in May of 2002.

        The MacGahan Family Tree

The family tree linked here was published in the festival program booklet in 1978 and has not been updated since then.  Due to retirements and relocations of the MacGahans, the foundation no longer has current addresses of the descendants of Januarius MacGahan nor any knowledge of the new generation of MacGahan's descendants.  We would appreciate any updated MacGahan family information which might be available.  Please send it to cjrausch@netpluscom.com or by mail to the following address:
